Purpose Statement- Communication Arts Program

The Communication Arts program provides students from all disciplines with the opportunity and training to improve their verbal and written communication skills. Students gain an appreciation of cultural heritage as it is revealed through the study of traditional and contemporary communication texts, including written and spoken discourse, literature, film, television, music, and advertising. Students learn to become effective and ethically responsible communicators, who can design, express, interpret and evaluate functional messages in a variety of contexts, including personal, social, political, religious and organizational settings.

Program Goals

  • Develop Foundational Communication Skills - Students will demonstrate proficiency in verbal, written, and visual communication, applying principles from public speaking, graphic design, video production, and small group communication to effectively convey messages across diverse media platforms.
  • Master Industry-Specific Knowledge and Ethics - Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of communication law and ethics, ensuring responsible and ethical media practices.
  • Enhance Digital and Social Media Competencies - Students will develop expertise in emerging digital communication technologies, preparing them for careers in the evolving media landscape.
  • Apply Strategic Communication in Specialized Fields - Students will integrate strategic messaging and gain skills specific to their chosen emphasis area(s).
  • Engage in Practical and Professional Experiences - Students will apply their knowledge through opportunities such as hands-on projects, industry certifications, simulations, internships, and a capstone experience.
