SOWK 132 - Social Welfare

This course provides an introduction to social welfare policy building on previous social work coursework (SOWK 131). Different frameworks that are used for analyzing social welfare policy and programs are introduced. These frameworks are applied to examples from policy areas of special interest to social workers, including financial assistance, health care issues, and racial injustices. Students are introduced to some of the major contemporary themes in social policy including universalism and selectivity, entitlements and state control, block grants versus open-ended funding, cash/in-kind benefits, privatization, decentralization, the social role of government, and selected topics on the public agenda.
