SOWK 333 - Human Diversity in Social Work Practice

Credits: 3 hours
This course is designed to enhance the cultural competencies of students within a social work framework. Students will explore concepts of diversity in the social work profession, including but not limited to: social constructs of race, ethnicity, gender, sex, and class. Relevant sociological themes of power, privilege, social and global stratification, and representation are applied to the development of professionalism, cultural sensitivity, cultural empathy and global awareness. The course provides an overview of social, economic, and political influences on underrepresented populations across the world. Students will also examine theoretical models on multiculturalism and various ethical considerations for meeting the needs of globally diverse populations in the field of social work.
