Major Requirements

Major Requirements: 48 Credit Hours

Bachelor of Arts students must take 12 credits of the Lower Division General Education requirement in the same World Language.

Exit Exam: ETS

Students must earn a grade of C or better in any course counting toward the English major

Required English Courses: 9 Credit Hours

ENGL 430 - Literary Criticism Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 438 - Advanced Writing Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 439 - Descriptive Linguistics Credits: 3 hours

Choose 12 Credit Hours from the following:

ENGL 331 - English Literature through 1660 Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 332 - English Literature 1660-1830 Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 333 - English Literature since 1830 Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 334 - American Literature through 1865 Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 335 - American Literature since 1865 Credits: 3 hours

Choose 9 Credit Hours from the Following:

ENGL 431 - Studies in British Literature Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 432 - Studies in Modern Literature Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 433 - Women in Literature Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 437 - Studies in British and American Authors Credits: 3 hours

Writing or Literature Electives: 6 Credit Hours

Choose two 300- or 400- level courses in Writing or Literature.

Spanish or French Electives: 12 Credit Hours

Besides these requirements for the major, these additional courses are required for teacher certification in English:

COMM 230 - Introduction to Public Speaking Credits: 3 hours
THTR 130 - Introduction to Theatre Credits: 3 hours
ENGL 337 - Literature of Adolescence Credits: 3 hours
OR
EDUC 338 - P-5 Reading and Language Arts II Credits: 3 hours
